Of His Fulness

John the Baptist clearly understood the nature of Christ and preached it. John the Apostle writes, “And of his fulness have we all received” (John 1:16). Fulness is the word plērōma, which means “to fill up, to be complete, nothing lacking.” Paul affirmed this about Christ in Colossians 2:9, “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” That all the fulness of the Godhead dwells in Christ means that the totality of divine powers and attributes resides in Christ bodily, as a man. Jesus Christ is the God-Man, with all fulness.

Christ shares with us “of His fulness.” We lack nothing in Christ. “And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power” (Col. 2:10). Christ supplies us out of His fulness through the Holy Spirit with the resources we need to serve Him. Strength, comfort, peace, knowledge, wisdom, discernment, joy, love, faithfulness, perspective, longsuffering, meekness, goodness, kindness, sacrifice, goodwill, selflessness, forgiveness, mercy, power, ability—all of these come from Christ, from His fulness.

Paul warmed his heart by remembering that the Lord sees us through our trials through the prayers of saints and the supply of the Spirit. All that the Spirit supplies comes out of the fulness of Christ. The Godhead is at work furnishing you with the resources you need to live for Him. Grace is available. The riches of Christ’s fulness are available. Will you receive it?
