God's Great, Eternal Gift

“…but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The Apostle Paul spoke these words in Romans 6:23. God is a giving God. He gives physical life to all men, and He give spiritual life to those who believe on His Son. The gift that God gives is eternal life, life that never ends, life to dwell with Him forever in heaven.

The eternal life that God gives is a gracious gift. We don’t deserve His gift, because we are all sinners. We can’t earn His gift, because it is a gift—something given. We can’t lose His gift, because it is eternal. The gift of God is a divine gift, a gift given out of His love, a gift perfectly consistent with His nature. Only God gives this gift, and no other gift compares.

God gives this gracious gift of eternal life “through Jesus Christ our Lord.” Eternal life, salvation, only comes through Jesus Christ. It is found in Him, and no other. This explains why Christ came into the world: to live a perfect life and die on the cross for our sins so that we could be saved. Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. The greatest gift that was ever given was God’s Son, and the greatest gift that we could ever receive is eternal life. You can have eternal life, but you must receive it as God’s gracious gift through His Son.
