God Gives the Increase

In doing the work of the ministry, many people contribute toward a person’s conversion. Jesus instructed His disciples, “I sent you to reap that whereon ye bestowed no labour: other men laboured, and ye are entered into their labours” (Jn. 4:38). The Apostle Paul taught the Corinthians the same thing: “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase” (I Cor. 3:6). Whatever our role, God gives the increase.

Whether a person sows spiritual seed in a another’s life or reaps, God is the One who saves. He is the One worthy of praise. Since all glory goes to the Lord, those ministering find no room to compete. Their chief concern is that Christ be glorified.

John the Baptist exhibited great humility in his ministry. Speaking of the Lord Jesus, John said: “He must increase, but I must decrease” (Jn. 3:30). Jesus came from above; He is the One to whom the Father gave all things into His hand; and it is on Him, that if a person believes, he will be saved. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abideth on him” (Jn. 3:36).

Let us keep our focus on the Lord Jesus. Our service must be about exalting Christ. He is the One who saves. He is the One who is worthy. He is God.
