Edify the Church

The purpose of our lives is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ. We are to love Him supremely and worship Him in spirit and in truth. We are to worship the Lord every day and all throughout the day. That includes worshiping Christ in church.

The church assembles to worship the Lord and for the saints to be edified. Ephesians 4:16 teaches that because Christ is the Head of the church, that the church increases spiritually and edifies itself. “From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love” (Eph. 4:16). Edification comes through the Word of God and through each of the members. This means that every member of the church contributes to the edification of the church.

When you come to church, look to encourage others and look to be encouraged; look to strengthen others and look to be strengthened. Let the Lord work in your life, and then seek to be a blessing to others. Your faithful attendance in and of itself is a blessing, but take it a step further and seek to encourage others in the Lord.

Let me give you a few tips. First, before you arrive at church, ask the Lord to work in your life through the preaching, singing, and fellowship. Second, ask the Lord to give you opportunity to encourage another member. Third, look for opportunities to be a blessing. The Lord wants to strengthen our church body, and He uses each of us to do that.
